"Tyler knew this, therefore I knew this"

By the end of the novel we realize that Tyler and the Narrator are in fact the same person, what does this tell us about the ideas the author is trying to convey.

The Narrator's discovery about his alternate personality in Tyler Durden conveys the theme that general perception is often deceit. Throughout Fight Club Palahniuk has Tyler Durden criticize the style in which society is run. He talks about the materialistic desires people hold due to the perception that a successful life is a life that leads to great wealth. Palahniuk uses Fight Club to try and show that life is not about materialism, but about the goals that are achieved, and the importance of existenialism in history, to be seen by the future as more than just a tombstone.

The author uses Tyler and the narrator being the same person to convey the idea that often we are responsible for things that we claim to be innocent of. He wants the reader to consider how even the small actions can have tragic consequences.
